A.Yatseniuk, the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, calls to defer Discussions concerning Ukraine´s joining Membership Action Plan till the End of Ukraine-NATO Summit in Bucharest in April 2008
In view of publications in the mass media concerning the meeting of the Conciliative Council of the leaders of Deputy Factions and chairmen of the Committees, held on Monday, 11 February, the Press Service of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariate informs of the following:
The discussion regarding Ukraine`s joining NATO Membership Action Plan was held during the meeting.
Arseniy Yatseniuk, the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, drew attention to a number of fundamental issues. "Firstly, nobody has signed the application for the NATO membership. Secondly, the resolution on joining MAP in the form of the decree of The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine was not adopted. Thirdly, we should await the resolution of Bucharest. Fourthly, in view of the said facts, the subject of the discussion is unreasonable", - he stated.
A.Yatseniuk introduced a compromise way to settle the said problem: provided the motion regarding Ukraine´s joining MAP is introduced during the NATO Summit in Bucharest, the Parliament can pass a resolution regarding holding referendum on the said issue, prior to the relevant resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
Therefore, the Parliament can start efficient work.
The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine addressed the attendees of the meeting with the motion to discuss the agenda of parliament´s work within the current week. He defined the following issues to be urgently considered: the Address of the President of Ukraine to The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Bill on the State Purchases, the amendments to the Law on the State Budget of Ukraine.
